no it is not a purim joke

This may not be Torah, but it is very Israeli,

As you know, people in Israel pay a TV tax to receive free
channels. However, since the Government allowed the broadcast
system to deteriorate to the level that analogue transmission was no
longer possible, no one could get the broadcast. It was therefore
decided that everyone should be given a device which receives
digital transmission. The device works very well and you receive
five free channels including the half hour English news and other
excellent English news features. Just now they made up the criteria
whom should receive a 50% rebate after they purchase the device.

The person must have at least four children and not make more than
6000 shekels/month.
The person must prove they do not have cable or satellite dish as of
last year.
The person must bring the last three pay slips and the annual wage report.
The person must prove that they have paid the TV tax for the last
ten years or so.
Of course, one must prove that they bought the device.

It will take four months to process the request and then the
Government will rebate you 225 shekels on a 450 shekel device. (My
converter cost only 300 shekels so if I qualified , I would be
entitled to 150 shekels.)

You didn't mention how much it will cost to process this request.

I can't believe I still have to pay the stupid tv tax.

Yup France has got that tv tax too... and now they've decided to extend it to anyone with a internet connection. So you're in their books the second you get adsl installed (just like when you get cable or buy a TV)
It all happens automatically through the miracle of technology, they have your address and you get the tax thingy in the mail one morning.
Now if you sell your tv, or it breaks OR you simply don't have access to ANY type of tv, you have to find a PEN (remember those?) somewhere in a dusty drawer and write... or actually print out your letter and then SEND IT. Meaning: you have to drag your body to the post office, maybe even lick an envelope and stamp, wait in line forever (pass out in my case).
Anyways thats a 44€ rebate, not bad.
